Did you see the trick play that the Washington Redskins tried to run at the end of the half on Monday Night Football? They lined up for a field goal , then they had a shift to the left into a swinging gate formation. New York then immediately calls a timeout. Washington was losing 24-0 with seconds to go in the first half, so did they kick a field goal to put points on the board like they were supposed to? No, they decide to run the same trick play again. This time New York knew what was coming. Washington snapped the ball to the holder, and three Giant defensive linemen came free. He then heaves the ball into a crowd of six Giants for an interception, which was almost run back for a Giants’ touchdown.
When a team is down by such a large margin, why not just go for the sure thing at the end of a half. A trick play can only work if the other team has no idea that it is coming. In the NFL, if a defense knows which play is coming, they usually stop it. Also when a team is down big, the best way to come back is steady play. Get a stop, march down the field and score points, and repeat the process. Jim Zorn and this coaching circus will be gone soon anyway.
